On 27 March 2013 a ‘mobile group’ of inspectors arrived at the office of the Memorial Research and Information Centre in St. Petersburg. Aleksandr Daniel, who witnessed the inspection, shares his impressions.
“They came. They divided into small groups (in the view of several TV cameras). They handed over a list of documents that they insist on receiving.
They made out a protocol about our refusal to let them ‘inspect the premises’.
All the negotiations are being conducted exclusively by the lawyer Ivan Pavlov, who arrived here early in the morning as the lawyer acting for the Memorial Research Center. The beauty of the thing is that Ivan’s organization (the Foundation for Freedom of Information) is also being inspected. And the inspectors in both cases are the same people. I’m sure they were pleased to see the face of Ivan again, one that they know so well 🙂
There were five officials: from the prosecutor’s office, from the tax inspectorate, two police officers (one apparently from the ‘anti-extremism’ squad, the other dealing with computer piracy), and a fire inspector. <…>
You can find two documents on the website: one is a list of documents that must be handed to the prosecutor’s office by 29 March (that is, by the day after tomorrow) and the protocol concerning (our) refusal to allow (them) access to inspect the premises.”
